First of all, your website need to be search engine friendly: only use valid tag, do not use too many flash or image, you have sitemap, no broken link, etc. 2. Optimized the web page for that keyword. I.e: keyword on the title, header, meta, start of content, middle of content and end of content but need to be natural and not excessive. Surely the content need to be consistent with the keyword. 3. Get as many 'backlink' as possible, i.e: other website put hyperlink pointing to your website. The best is one way link: that website pointing to yours and there is no link from yours to that website (hence, there is little point of 'swapping link' with other webmaster). But quality over quantity. For example if you have 1 link from popular site , say cnn.com, that worth many many more than link from unknown site. All three factors above are a must, especially if your keyword is a popular one (you have many competitors) The most difficult one is no 3.
